  5. A family  of  eukaryotic  and  prokaroytic  proteins  that  seem  to be mainly
  6. involved in  the  intake  of  small  peptides with the concomitant uptake of a
  7. proton has  been  recently  characterized [1,2,3]. The proteins that belong to
  8. this family are:
  9.  
  10.  - Yeast peptide transporter PTR2.
  11.  - Rabbit intestine proton-dependent oligopeptide transporter PeptT1.
  12.  - Arabidopsis proton-dependent nitrate/chlorate transporter CHL1.
  13.  - Arabidopsis histidine transporter NTR1.
  14.  - Lactococcus lactis di- and tri-peptide transporter dtpT.
  15.  - Escherichia coli hypothetical protein yhiP.

  17. These integral   membrane   proteins   are   predicted   to   comprise  twelve
  18. transmembrane regions.  As  signature  patterns,  we  selected two of the best
  19. conserved regions.  The  first pattern correspond to a region that include the
  20. end of  the  second  transmembrane  region,  a cytoplasmic loop as well as the
  21. third transmembrane region.  The second pattern corresponds to the core of the
  22. fifth transmembrane region.
